Coffee Drink Sizes

The question arises once in a while - exactly how big are the coffees that we make supposed to be? There aren't any hard-and-fast rules, but generally we see the following:

  • Medium/Tall: 12oz
  • Large/Grande: 16oz
  • X-Large/Venti: 20oz

What happened to the small? Most consumers don't miss it - anything under 12oz doesn't really count as a coffee to today's customers. Even Tim Hortons "small" is now closer to the Starbucks Tall. The majority of coffee shops have followed suite in removing "small" from the menu in favour of larger coffees. Those that are really dead-set on having an 8oz coffee can still buy a 12oz and decide not to finish it.
